Today in Acoustic-Rock History

1958 – George Harrison joins The Quarrymen, the earliest incarnation of The Beatles.

1970 – John Lennon’s “Instant Karma” backed with Yoko Ono’s “Who Has Seen the Wind?” is released in the U.K. on Apple Records.

1971 – Richard Thompson leaves Fairport Convention for a solo career that would also include several critically-acclaimed duet albums with wife Linda.

1981 – A New York Post headline reads “Surviving Beatles Plan New Album as Lennon Tribute.” The closest thing to a Beatles reunion at the time was in Montserrat, where Ringo Starr was working with Paul McCartney on Paul’s “Tug of War” LP. The album, however, did contain McCartney’s elegy to his late partner John Lennon, “Here Today.”

1998 – Beach Boy Carl Wilson dies of lung cancer at age 51 in Los Angeles.
