1966 – In an article appearing in the London Evening Star, John Lennon stated about the Beatles, “We’re more popular than Jesus right now.” In the UK, the comment passed without much fuss, but in the US, a Beatle-backlash ensued.

1967 – The “New Musical Express” reports the Spencer Davis Group has announced Stevie Winwood and his brother Muff will leave the band after an April 2 show. Just 18 years old, Steve Winwood had been with the group for four years and would go on to co-found Traffic.

1972 – Badfinger receives a gold record for “Day After Day.”

1973 – Pink Floyd, promoting their new album, “The Dark Side of the Moon,” start a three week tour of the U.S. in Madison, Wisconsin.

1977 – The Rolling Stones play the first of two concerts at El Mocambo, a small club in Toronto, Canada.

1986 – Richard Manuel of The Band dies at the age of 41.

2001 – Bruce Cockburn is inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the 30th Anniversary Juno Awards ceremonies at the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario. Cockburn joins such notable Canadian artists as Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot.
