1967 – The Who begin their first full-scale U.S. tour as the opening act for Herman’s Hermits.

1969 – Bob Dylan makes a surprise appearance with The Band at the Mississippi River Rock Festival. He performs three numbers.

1973 – “Janis Joplin’s Greatest Hits” enters the album charts. It will peak at #22 and sell more than 2 million copies.

1979 – Joni Mitchell’s collaboration with jazz bass player and bandleader Charles Mingus, simply titled “Mingus,” is released a half-year after his death.

1987 – Steve Miller gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

2003 – Skip Battin, former bassist for the Byrds, dies near Palm Springs, Calif., of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He is 69. Battin appeared on the Byrds’ 1970-71 albums “Untitled”,
“Byrdmaniax”, and “Farther Along”.
